Sea Kayaking Isle of Mull Explorer
This trip is camping based but we may also visit Bothies and bunkhouses if the weather is wet. We will make the most of the flexibility we get from camping to visit the coastline sheltered from the wind without too much driving. The Northern part of the large island of Mull has a huge variety of scenery including stunning cliffs and geology and wonderful sandy beaches. Rich in wildlife including Sea Eagles, Otters, Basking Sharks, Puffins and seals. It includes the islands of Ulva and Gometra and if calm conditions prevail we may even get to the Ilse of Staffa. The Southern part of the island includes the beautiful Ross of Mull and the island of Iona as well as the more sheltered sea lochs of Spelve and Buie. On several occasions the weather has been good enough to sneek out to the Isle of Staffa and sea kayak in Fingals cave.
We meet in Oban to select the right sea kayak for your trip and then head across to Mull on the Oban to Craignure ferry. Some people prefer to take their own vehicle.(NB in 2015 there was a huge reduction in the ferry fares)
The 5-6 days are pitched at Improver plus to Intermediate which means you should be comfortable with the Atlantic swells and force 3 to 4 winds though we do our best to find sheltered venues. You also need to be familiar with being rescued after a capsize.
The days are designed to be interesting rather than arduous and include coaching along the way but the week is mainly about enjoying being in this stunning landscape. We can also take a double sea kayak if someone is a bit nervous about being out in a single in windier conditions.
