Sea Kayaking Inner Hebrides Improver
Some of the best Sea Kayaking in the World. Last year we had days with porpoises doing tail stands. Great rock scenery with numerous islands and excellent campsites. When the weather is settled we visit such wonderful places as Scarba, Jura, the Garvellachs. In more difficult conditions we have the Isle of Luing, Seil, Kerrera and Lismore. We give people the opportunity to improve their sea kayaking skill level and further develop their knowledge of this environment by encouraging everyone to get involved in planning where we go each day, but its absolutely fine if you want to just relax and enjoy everywhere we visit.
This trip is aimed at those who have done some kayaking before and there will be opportunities to play in tide races or you can enjoy your lunch on the shore while others play. Ideally you should be able to paddle into a force 3 and be comfortable in a 3 foot swell. There are so many options that it would be pointless writing an itinerary as this depends on the weather and on the group. Usually this trip will involve camping for several nights usually Wednesday and Thursdays. The camping trips enable us to explore some of the more remote islands and perhaps camp beside the "Grey Dogs tiderace so that we can see how it changes with both the flood and ebb tides. If you have a group who dont want to camp then we can wholly base it from B&B's/ Hotels. We don't cover huge distances instead aiming to explore the environment we are passing through. When you are not camping there are lots of great places to stay in the area and some excellent pubs and restaurants. Please see our Accommodation pages for places other guests have recommended.
A typical itinerary is
Meet Monday 9.30am Sea Kayak Oban Chat about expectations and look at possibilities & plan the day trip. Try out a few different sea kayaks, while out for the day Increasingly people are requesting double kayaks for use on courses and our shop Sea Kayak Oban has a good selection of demo composite double sea kayaks which we can use on courses. Please bring a packed lunch. We usually finish by 4.30pm.
Tuesday Another day trip exploring a different island then plan the next few days. This is also a good time to practise anything that might involve getting wet while we have drying facilities available. Its important we are sure you can cope with a capsize before we go out on camp. While there isnt the opportunity to teach you to roll we can work on improving your roll if you have already had teaching on this. It is more important to develop bracing skills so that you dont capsize in the first place and also develop rescue skills so that you can quickly get back in your sea kayak in the event of a capsize.
Wednesday, Thursday out camping from our Sea Kayaks exploring uninhabited islands, returning Friday afternoon finishing by 4pm. We aim to get out and explore the islands as we paddle around. Its not about covering big distances but much more about enjoying being in this beautiful part of the world both in and out of sea kayaks.
There are public showers close by our base for you to clean up if you are not staying in Oban on the Friday night.
Nb many people prefer to supply their own camping equipment & cook over a camp stove. We do have a supply of excellent gear available at a very reasonable rental rates. Please let us know in advance if you would like to rent.
