Isle of Gigha Explorer 2 or 3 days
This is a paradise close to the city. It's about 2 1/2hrs drive from Glasgow to the Gigha Ferry in Tayinloan. Excellent paddling with beautiful sandy beaches all round the island interspersed with rugged cliffs. More info about Gigha www.gigha.org.uk/
The last ferry departs Tayinloan for Gigha on Friday evening at 6pm and on Sunday departs Gigha for Tayinloan at 4.30pm.
This weekend is aimed at those who would like to kayak for 4-6 hrs per day and also enjoy what else Gigha has to offer. It is expected that everyone will have sea kayaked before, but a high level of competence is not required. We would aim to improve people's personal paddling in an informal setting but primarily to enjoy this beautiful island. Please note we also run introductory courses on Gigha for more info please email us.
It is possible to camp or stay in one of the excellent B&Bs or self catering cottages or the community owned hotel. We usually leave you to organise this as sometimes people prfer to extend their stay. The island has many lovely walks and the beautiful gardens. This is a great trip to share with a non kayaking partner. Some how reminiscent of Cornwall.
We meet at the campsite only 200 metres from where the ferry comes in. NB the campsite also has a very good restaurant and bar. and is only 5 mins walk fromm the hotel and 15 mins walk from the Springbank B&B. We start by enjoying a paddle from the campsite tosee where your skills lie and what we can work on then we make a plan for the day. As always on our courses bring a packed lunch as we will be away all day. Depending on the weather and on the group we aim to paddle all the way around the main island. Sometimes we are lucky enough to be able todo this in a day and other times we use a shuttle to do some of the trip then leave the sea kayaks and return the next day. We also explore the small islands to the south of Gigha. Sometimes we run 3 day trips to Gigha which gives us more time to explore the whole place.
We do need to know your height and weight and shoe size and paddling experi ence in advance so that we can arrive with the right paddling clothing as well as a selection of sea kayaks that will work for you. The standard daily rate applies to Gigha trips and there is a small extra to cover fuel and ferry fares for our vehicle and instructor/sea kayak guide.
